OVER 1,000 members of the civil servants' PCS union are due to start balloting for strike action on 10 October. Workers in central and west London are considering action in defence of their PCS branch secretary, Chris Ford.

Chris is facing an internal investigation by Jobcentre Plus management. This follows allegations that Chris assaulted a scab during a strike over safety in the job centres. Over 100 complaints were made against pickets during the long dispute, but management is pursuing only two-one against Chris and the other against his fellow branch steward, Phil Henry.

The only evidence against Chris and Phil is the testimony of a scab. This attempt to intimidate union activists is part of a wider management offensive. Indicative ballots in London offices show large support for strike action. If we stand by Chris and Phil we can defeat management.
