Channel Tunnel

Issue No. 1820

WORKERS ON the Channel Tunnel Rail Link threatened to walk off the job last week. Their wages have been cut in half. The 70 workers are building the tunnel from Stratford in east London to King's Cross.

They were promised £968 a week for 12-hour shifts on a seven-day shift system. Now overtime and shift allowances have been axed. One tunneller said, 'Some of the blokes have walked off the job already. There's a lot of work around and we don't have to put up with it.' Another said, 'If it's not sorted out by Christmas everyone will be off.'
