FIREFIGHTERS ON Merseyside were set to begin a campaign of industrial action from Thursday of this week over a scheme to make them double up as paramedics.

The action follows a 68.3 percent yes vote in a ballot.

“The Category A incidents we are being asked to act as paramedics for include gunshot wounds, unconsciousness in children under the age of two and haemorrhaging in pregnancy,” says Neil Young from the Fire Brigades Union.

“Firefighters are being asked to do this with just five days training compared with five and a half months training for paramedics.”
