THE US military base on the Indian Ocean island of Diego Garcia was undamaged by the tsunami. The base had been forewarned, officials at the US Pacific Tsunami Warning Centre in Hawaii said.
Diego Garcia is about 2,000 miles from the earthquake’s epicentre. The safety of the US base contrasts with the destruction throughout the rest of the region.
The island, a British dependent territory leased to the US, has been home to the military base since the eviction and deportation of nearly 2,000 Chagos Islanders 30 years ago.
The courts have ruled that the deportation was illegal, but the islanders are still battling for compensation and the right to return to Diego Garcia and the other Chagos Islands.
