Mordechai Vanunu

RAPTUROUS celebrations broke out among students at Glasgow University at the end of term when they found out that Israeli political prisoner Mordechai Vanunu had topped the poll for the position of rector of the college.

Vanunu, who blew the whistle on Israel’s nuclear weapons programme, is still under house arrest despite being released from prison after 18 years.

The vote is a major step forward in the fight to win his complete freedom.

It came as a result of a tremendous campaign on the campus which united many societies and students. We had a series of events including a meeting with ex-MI5 whistle blower David Shayler.

There is now a new confidence among Glasgow University students over what we can achieve. That looks set to feed into the mobilisation against the G8 summit in Scotland in July.
