Issue No. 1811

THE NATIONAL president of the EIS-CLA, the Scottish further education lecturers' union, was sacked last week from his job at Glasgow's Central College of Commerce. Jim O'Donovan had been suspended on full pay following a disciplinary hearing at the end of last term.

Obviously worried that they would face another angry demonstration by staff at the college, the appeal hearing met in the summer holidays. A union meeting at the end of the last term voted to take industrial action if Jim was not reinstated and called on other trade unionists for solidarity.

Jim's college is currently involved in plans to merge with two other Glasgow colleges that would inevitably result in job losses. Obviously a strong union would inconvenience their plans. An open letter and a factsheet are being prepared demanding Jim's reinstatement.

For more information and to add your name or your organisation to the open letter write to Andrew Fullwood, 23 Rodil Avenue, Glasgow G44 5ER or e-mail tubby@ntlworld.com
