Mobilise to stop beat of war drum

Issue No. 1809

GEORGE BUSH is beating the drum of war louder as financial scandals sweep the US. He has brought forward a meeting with his loyal manservant Tony Blair to discuss attacking Iraq. Leaked papers from the US military talk of deploying 250,000 troops in the Middle East to launch a full scale invasion.

That would mean not only enormous suffering for the people of Iraq. It would risk a wider conflict across the region. The dangers are so great that other Western leaders and some in Bush's government have doubts about going to war.

Unfortunately that does not mean it will not happen. Extending the 'war on terror' is central to the Bush gang's strategy of securing global US dominance. Working people and the poor the world over face the threat of intensified war alongside economic crisis.

Arms budgets are soaring in the US and Britain just as both governments say they haven't enough money for what workers need. We need to fight on both fronts-for decent living standards and services, and against the drive for more wars aimed at the poor.
