HEALTH WORKERS demonstrated at three hospitals in east London last Friday. It was the launch of a coordinated fight to secure a better deal for contract workers.
There were lively protests at Whipps Cross, Homerton, and Mile End hospitals. Unison lodged a claim with the major contractors, ISS Mediclean and Compass Medirest, exposing the gulf between the workers who retain NHS pay and conditions and new staff employed by these companies. The union is demanding equal pay for all staff.
The East London Communities Organisation, an alliance of 40 local community organisations, supports the claim.
