Nurse in Britain faces deportation

Issue No. 1804

A NURSE recruited to help NHS staff shortages is the latest victim of the government's crackdown on immigration. Edina Mukwaira spent three years at Middlesex University studying to become a nurse. She was due to start a job at the beginning of this week at the Royal Free Hospital in north London.

Instead Edina faces the threat of deportation, and has been banned from working. Edina took a trip to Zimbabwe in May to visit her sick mother. But when she returned to Gatwick airport the immigration officials held her for 12 hours. 'I was not treated like a human being,' said Edina. 'A woman officer accused me of buying my visa. She said it looked a fake.' Edina's case has been taken up by her Unison union.
