Don’t let Bush and Blair off the hook over G8

by Gill Hubbard
Issue No. 1943

The world’s number one terrorist, George Bush, and his sidekick, Tony Blair, will be coming to Scotland in July. People should come and take part in the demonstrations against them.

Everyone who marches on the 19 March anti-war demonstration should know that Bush and Blair not only took us into the war on Iraq. They also attack our civil liberties, keep the majority in poverty and increase the risk of climate change.

There are three major issues facing humanity today — war, climate change and global poverty.

Everyone who cares about these issues needs to come to Scotland in July. G8 alternatives will be running an alternative summit, with speakers including George Monbiot, Susan George, Mark Curtis, Haidi Giuliani and John Pilger.

The chancellor, Gordon Brown, has asked people to demonstrate on the Make Poverty History day of action on Saturday 2 July, and I think that’s a good thing. But he needs to follow up his words with action.

We’ve had enough rhetoric — 35 years ago Britain signed up to the UN target of spending a meagre 0.7 percent of Gross National Income on aid. I wonder how many of the countries in the G8 have managed it, if any.

It’s going to be a brilliant week. We are expecting somewhere between 100,000 and 200,000 people to make it to the Make Poverty History demonstration. We are planning to organise camping facilities for people.

We don’t want to let the G8 off the hook. We need to show that we will not go away until these issues are addressed.
