The US is attempting to interfere in Lebanon’s politics. The US has made no secret about its intentions for Lebanon, Syria and Palestine.

US secretary of state Condoleezza Rice, and even George Bush himself, have made it clear they would like to disarm Hizbollah and the Palestinian groups inside Lebanon. The UN resolution 1559 has our disarmament as its central point.

The US wants to force the Lebanese state to turn on its own people and is attempting to use the assassination of martyr and former prime minister Rafiq al-Hariri to change the elected government.

The US is also trying to stir up sectarian tension in the country. But up to a million Lebanese, from all religious groups, came out into the streets to say “no” to US and Israeli threats against our country, threats against Syria and threats against the Palestinians refugees in Lebanon.

This demonstration proved beyond a doubt that the Lebanese people will not be pushed around.

They say we are a terrorist group and should be disarmed. But we took up arms to liberate our lands from Israeli occupation.

We made an agreement with the Lebanese government that we should retain our arms because we face daily military threats from Israel.

The US intentions are clear. They want to crush the resistance in Lebanon, and they want to crush the resistance in Palestine. They also want to cow Syria so that they can embed their rule over Arab lands.

We do not believe their talk about spreading democracy in the Middle East — the Americans do not have our welfare at heart.

The Lebanese government has a longstanding agreement with Syria for it to withdraw its troops.

The Syrian president Bashar al-Assad has already issued a statement detailing the withdrawal of troops. This is an agreement between Lebanon and Syria, but the US is trying to stir up tensions for its own ends.

All we demand is the right to defend our country.

We demand that the Palestinians have the right to return to their homes and we demand an end to US and Israeli interference in the Middle East.

Only this can create conditions for peace in our lands.
