Around 500 people packed into the Amir Millet community centre in Sparkhill, Birmingham, last Saturday to back Respect general election candidate Salma Yaqoob.

The meeting was attended by a broad range of people of many different backgrounds.

Respect MP George Galloway said, “Can you imagine the impact it will have all over the world? The very first Muslim woman to walk into parliament and sent there by you, standing proud and standing up for what she believes in?

“Can you imagine what an achievement that will be and what a blow that will be for Blair who killed so many women who looked like her?”

He urged the community to shun its current Labour MP Roger Godsiff. Salma Yaqoob reiterated the point, saying, “Our MP Roger Godsiff voted for war in Afghanistan.

“Despite the two million march and despite the fact that he dared to say he was anti-war afterwards, this man supported Tony Blair in the second amendment for the war in Iraq to go ahead. Shame on him.

“And shame on us if we let any Labour MP represent us this May.”
