A MEETING of more than 100 people called by Crawley Pensioners Action Group kicked off Crawley Against the Council Tax. Christine Melson, of the Isitfair organisation, which led the recent national demo in London over the council tax, spoke. She told us about activists in some areas who have refused to pay last year's bills and face court proceedings as a result.
They include 84 year old ex-magistrate and Second World War veteran David Richardson in Devon, who has already been hauled into court. Two more members of Isitfair in Devon, Elizabeth Winkfield and Sylvia Hardy, are due in court in the coming weeks.
Most but by no means all of those present at the Crawley meeting were pensioners, and a huge amount of anger was expressed against the government, at the loss of local democracy and at the way the poor are subsidising the rich. Most of those present were also keen to join a council tax payment strike when the next rise is announced this spring. This movement needs to snowball.

THE SCOTTISH Socialist Party (SSP) this week launched a major campaign to ditch the council tax. The campaign involves a Scrap the Council Tax demonstration in Glasgow on 24 April, backed up with a Scotland-wide Scrap the Council Tax petition and a bill in the Scottish Parliament to replace the council tax with an income-based alternative.
SSP MSP Tommy Sheridan said, 'We are determined to overthrow the unfair Tory council tax. Pensioners and workers are hammered by this Tory tax while the wealthy pay a pittance.'
