The Scottish Socialist Party (SSP) is standing across Scotland, with the exception of East Kilbride where it is backing anti-war candidate Rose Gentle.
Keith Baldassara is the SSP councillor for Pollok in Glasgow and is the party’s candidate for the Glasgow South West constituency.
He told Socialist Worker, “We are standing as Scotland’s anti-war and anti-privatisation party.
“We held our council seat in Pollok and were second placed in four other wards in the constituency. So we are working to achieve a result that builds on that.
“Through hard work and genuinely representing people we have built up a base of support in the area. We’ve taken up all the issues.
“Over youth disorder, for example, we’ve argued for positive steps to address the lack of community facilities and poor social conditions.
“When you carefully explain to people what the solutions are they do listen and can see that in cost terms alone the New Labour policy of locking up more and more people just does not make sense.
“People are receptive to our message because they have seen what having just one SSP councillor in the area can achieve.
“The general election will not be easy for us.
“But Labour are more unpopular than ever since 1997 and we are going to take the fight to them.”
