Votes for action at threatened Marconi plants

Issue No. 1952

Workers at the Marconi telecommunications company are organising to stop 800 threatened job losses.

Marconi recently announced the cuts after it failed to win part of a £10 billion deal with BT. “Everyone is shocked at these plans,” said Sean Leahy, an Amicus shop steward at Marconi.

“They involve 450 jobs going in Coventry — 270 at New Century Park and 180 from the closure of New Horizon Park. A further 300 jobs will go at Edge Lane in Liverpool, leading to its closure.

“Two mass meetings in Liverpool have voted to oppose these plans. Two meetings at New Horizon Park have voted for strike action. People are very angry — and the union will be organising further meetings.”
