Academic Boycott

The Manchester University branch of the lecturers’ AUT union voted last week to support the academic boycott of Israeli institutions.

Despite the university’s reputation as a base for pro-Israeli ideas, the opponents of the boycott are now on the defensive.

They launched a strong mobilisation, including well known figures such as Norman Geras, but they made no attempt to deny the brutality of Israel’s human rights record.

A number of new activists spoke passionately for solidarity with the Palestinians.

Many AUT members are proud to have taken this stand and look forward to twinning with a Palestinian university as the next step in this campaign.
