Further Education Lecturers

Issue No. 1953

Lecturers in the Natfhe union at Newcastle College took their seventh day of strike action on Tuesday of this week.

They are striking against longer hours and management’s refusal to honour a pay deal.

The action came after a one-day strike on Thursday of last week which, says Natfhe branch secretary Jon Bryan, “was again very well supported, with lively and effective picket lines”.

The college management wants to increase teaching hours from 24 to 30 hours a week and is refusing to implement a nationally agreed pay deal.

The action at Newcastle College underlines the crisis facing adult and further education due to continuing underfunding.

A rally on Tuesday afternoon was to discuss further steps in the dispute.
