As of Tuesday morning I had received over 11,800 e-mails of support following my appearance at the US senate’s McCarthyite committee seven days previously.
Thousands more have flooded into the Respect office. They include applications to join the party from as far afield as Texas and Colorado.
Respect members are reporting a similar surge of interest in their communities, workplaces and neighbourhoods. I am extending to you an appeal to join us. There are moments in history when the work of years can be accomplished in weeks.
Following Respect’s breakthrough at the general election and the triumphant vindication of the anti-war movement last week in Washington, now is just such a moment.
We in Respect believe the left, the immigrant communities, the poor, the pensioners, the students and all those abandoned by Tony Blair have a once in a lifetime opportunity to forge a party of hope that will represent them and be accountable to them, and to no other.
We are a campaigning party, a fighting party. Respect stands with those, such as the BBC workers this week, who are resisting the corrosion and sell-off of our public services.
We are part of that resistance because we want to make real improvements in the lives of working people. Respect aims to fill the gaping democratic hole exposed by the general election. I ask you, your friends, family and workmates to join us in doing that.
