Defend the right to protest at the G8 summit

Issue No. 1953

G8 Alternatives, who are helping to mobilise people for the protests at the G8 summit in Scotland this July, have launched an open letter to defend the right to protest.

A flurry of scare stories has appeared in the Scottish press in an attempt to demobilise those planning to attend events surrounding the G8. Gill Hubbard from G8 Alternatives said, “A five mile ring of steel costing just under £1million is being put up around Gleneagles Hotel where the summit is set to take place on 6-8 July.

“This means the peaceful demonstration being organised by G8 Alternatives and supported by a number of organisations — including the Scottish TUC — on the opening day of the summit will not be able to follow a route that takes the protesters past the hotel.

“Our right to protest is in danger of being discarded because the world’s rulers don’t want their photo opportunities to be marred by demonstrators.

“Blair wants to keep us away so that he can play the statesman in front of the world’s number one terrorist, George Bush.”
