Shattering the boss

Issue No. 1889

WORKERS AT a glass factory in County Durham have walked out in a dispute over pay and conditions.

The strike at the Schott Industrial Glass factory, in Newton Aycliffe, is the first industrial action in the firm's 24-year history. The 170 union members in the 200-strong workforce walked out from 10pm on Thursday of last week and did not return until 10pm on Monday.

Schott Glass manufactures specialist glass products for worldwide markets. Tim Bush, regional industrial organiser with the TGWU union, said feelings are running high among the striking workers. 'We have a full turnout of union members on the picket line. The action has been caused by the company's immovable position over pay and conditions this year.'
