After the general election and George Galloway’s performance in the US there is a completely new audience for Respect in the trade unions.
People who thought we would get nowhere, or were doubtful we would make an impact, are now thinking again. We need to reach out and welcome in those people.
Respect must show that it will fight over privatisation, workers’ conditions, union rights and other issues.
As the third term continues, and Blair shows he is listening to the bosses, there will be new challenges and opportunities for Respect.
Let’s not forget that there will be a massive debate over pensions in the near future and more private sector involvement in the NHS and other public services.
Every Respect supporter in the unions should ask themselves simply if they can find a group of people around them to ask to join Respect. If we all recruit two or three each, it would transform Respect’s base and open the way to greater possibilities.
It is urgent we get going now.
