Patty Hearst

Guerilla — The Taking of Patty Hearst
Directed by Robert Stone
in cinemas now

This is a fascinating documentary about the abduction of Patty Hearst by the Symbionese Liberation Army, a small group of disaffected middle class youths living out a fantasy of urban guerilla warfare.

The director situates their “terrorist” actions against a background of horrific state violence at home and abroad. He remains sympathetic to their aims whilst showing up their limitations.

A short season of recent Italian films are showing in London this month. It includes a double bill of “movement” films directed by Francesca Comencini.

Don Vitaliano — Nothing But a Priest is a documentary about an anti-capitalist priest who has subsequently been defrocked.

Carlo Giuliani, A Boy reconstructs the last day in Carlo’s life before he was murdered by police during G8 protests in Genoa in 2001.

But best of the bunch by far is Marco Tullio Giordana’s The Hundred Steps, the gut wrenching true story of a young revolutionary who leads a fightback against the Mafia in his Sicilian town.

This new production by the Oxford Stage Company of Brendan Behan’s classic play against capital punishment is a must see.

The play is set in Dublin’s Mountjoy prison and follows the lives of prisoners in the run up to an execution. Behan drew on his own experience of being jailed in Mountjoy to craft the play’s dialogue.

Directed by Kathy Burke, this is the latest in a series of highly political works put on by the Tricycle Theatre. Hopefully it will spark a revival of interest in Behan’s work.
