Cairo protesters facing threats

Issue No. 1956

Egyptian authorities are continuing to persecute women protesters who were attacked and humiliated at the Kifaya democracy demonstration in Cairo on 25 May.

One of the journalists attacked that day, Shaymaa Abul Kheir of the al-Dustour newspaper, spoke out about threats from security services after victims filed a complaint to the prosecutor general.

Shaymaa said the security services have threatened to “kidnap or frame us and our families for crimes we did not commit”, if the women do not withdraw their complaint against the police. But they have refused to be intimidated.

Letters condemning the treatment of the Kifaya demonstrators should be sent to the Egyptian embassy, 26 South Street, London W1Y 6DD, fax 020 7355 3568.
