Stop the War Coalition convenor, Lindsey German, and chair of CND, Kate Hudson, have issued calls for anti-war protests during the G8
‘Stop the War has plans to hold a rally on Saturday 2 July. Poverty is not some natural accident — it’s the result of economic policy and decisions made by governments.
War is intrinsically a part of the system that creates poverty. That’s why our anti-war voices must be heard in Scotland.
We have also produced a white T-shirt with the words “Fight Poverty — Not War” for the Make Poverty History demonstration, when people have been asked to wear white.
‘We have been holding blockades at the nuclear base in Faslane regularly for at least the last ten years. There is a tradition of base blockades.
There will be a blockade on Monday 4 July. The police estimate is that ten thousand people will take part.
So they have applied for a road closure order — we don’t anticipate that they will prevent the blockade from taking place. But they will prevent traffic.
Faslane is the largest military base in Scotland, it’s the home of four Trident submarines — our very own weapons of mass destruction.
This blockade is important because we have to let the leaders of the G8 know that we make the connection between these military bases and war and poverty.
We need to highlight Britain’s nuclear hypocrisy. Nuclear weapons are a serious issue. I urge everyone who can to attend.’
