Disputes in the post

Issue No. 1957

Bognor Regis postal workers struck for a day last week and planned further action this weekend.

The dispute is over working practices and office arrangements which have made it impossible for workers to get their bonus for meeting targets.

Other disputes include Belfast where a spontaneous stoppage took place recently after working practices were changed without consultation. One shift stopped, workers had their pay suspended and then other came out in their support. Distribution workers (drivers) gave support, as did those at the returned mail centre. Solidarity had its effect. Management reinstated the pay, withdrew the changes, and agreed to consultation in the future.

At Bristol Patchway a dispute is brewing over management’s attempt to introduce a new working week of three 13.5 hour shifts.
