Firefighters in the Fire Brigades Union (FBU) in Somerset are to ballot for industrial action over a cruel decision by the fire authority to limit insurance payouts to firefighters’ families.
The ballot is expected to open on Monday of next week over the lack of insurance cover for firefighters responding to terrorist attacks.
The union has raised the issue with the government.
In addition, it has demanded that the fire authority confirm that in the event of death or injury arising from a terrorist incident it will make good any shortfall in payments to firefighters and their families. The fire authority has failed to give that assurance.
Leigh Redman, chair of Somerset FBU, says, “Our members are angry that the chief fire officer still has not done anything to resolve this situation.
“We’ve been raising this issue with the brigade for over a year now. We’ve done everything to work with them to resolve the issue. In all consultations we’ve had an open door policy. Yet the fire authority has done nothing.”
