Across the country, trains and buses are being booked, and filled, to take protesters to the G8 summit in a few days time.
Mobeen Azhar from the Stop the War Coalition in Leeds says, “There are two trains which have been filled as well as coaches and mini buses.
“Altogether I think about 3,000 people from Leeds are going to make it to next Saturday’s Make Poverty History protest in Edinburgh.
“There’s been a huge tide of feeling brought about by the focus on poverty, but we should also remember the links between poverty and war.
“The facts and figures, which have been highlighted recently about the number of children dying from poverty, are not new.
“Our leaders have had these figures for a long time and have done nothing about it.”
The Make Poverty History campaign enjoys incredibly wide support. Many of the groups have been formed by churches organising to get their members to Edinburgh.
Judith Howes from Boulden, Tyne & Wear says, “The Boulden churches got together and had a meeting about what we could do — and we decided to organise a coach.”
Another church organiser, Kath Beetle from Holmfirth in West Yorkshire says, “The coach is full now, we have 49 people going.”
Michael Webster from Derby says, “We’ve managed to fill a 35-seater coach, we came together in quite an ad-hoc way, involving some of the churches in the area.
“A lot more people are aware of the issues than when we were organising for the Birmingham G8 summit seven years ago.
Angela Powell, who works for Christian charity, CAFOD, in Sheffield says, “I’ve been working locally to get as many people to Scotland for the Make Poverty History demonstration.
“Some individuals have been involved in other campaigns — but this has caught the attention of general mass-goers.”
