The union Community has announced that that it has won compensation on behalf of members hit by redundancies at the steelmaker ASW in Cardiff in July 2002.
As well as losing their jobs, ASW employees in Cardiff and Sheerness subsequently discovered that their expected company pensions had been lost also.
An employment tribunal has found that KPMG, the administrator of ASW, failed to consult the trade unions prior to making the workforce redundant, as they were legally required to do.
As a consequence the tribunal decided that ex-employees should be entitled to a “protective award”, equivalent to 90 days pay.
Now workers are concentrating on the union’s campaign for pensions justice.
