Tom Hurndall murder verdict

Issue No. 1964

An Israeli soldier was convicted of manslaugher last week for the killing of British peace activist Tom Hurndall in April 2003 in Rafah in the Gaza Strip. Taysir Hayb shot Tom in the head as he tried to help Palestinian children.

Tom Hurndall, 22, died nine months later. Over two years of campaigning by the Hurndall family has forced the Israeli government to prosecute Hayb.

Sophie Hurndall, Tom’s sister, said, “It’s a huge landmark, it’s a milestone, it’s the first time that a soldier’s been convicted of manslaughter since the first intifada and it’s obviously been a long time coming.

“It’s been two years of us all working very hard at this.”

Jocelyn Hurndall, Tom’s mother, said, “The Israeli defence force has a very long way to go in improving their credibility to the world. Eight years is really very little if one takes international law into account.

“I am quite surprised by the leniency of this sentence. From the very beginning we have experienced a lack of willingness to get to the truth, which has been deeply shocking.”
