Morrisons supermarkets

Issue No. 1968

Thousands of Morrisons distribution workers could strike as the supermarket giant plans to shut several depots. The result of a joint T&G and GMB ballot for industrial action was set to be announced on Thursday of this week.

Documents obtained by the GMB show that Morrisons, which recently took over Safeway supermarkets, plans to close its Bristol, Warrington and Aylesford, Kent, depots.

About 2,000 jobs could go under the plans.

The closure plans will add to the anger of workers who were already balloting over Morrisons’ failure to agree national bargaining following the takeover.
