Kay Devito 1950-2005

by Ade Walter, Greenwich SWP
Issue No. 1968

Kay Devito sadly died last week.

Kay hated all forms of discrimination and always took up issues with people in the hope of changing their minds.

Kay was very active in the Unison union in south east London and became the Unison housing convener.

Kay was best known for her anti-racist and anti-Nazi stand and was involved with the Anti Nazi League and more recently Unite Against Fascism.

After Stephen Lawrence was murdered, Kay played a very important role in the campaign to get the Nazi BNP headquarters in our area closed down, which we eventually succeeded in doing.

Kay also supported groups of strikers, the campaign to defend council housing, and the campaign to defend asylum seekers.

Kay will be remembered for her sense of humour, her outgoing personality, her straightforward way of speaking her mind and her principled stand on so many issues.

Kay will be missed.

Our deepest sympathies go to her family.
