Restaurant workers demonstrated for pay justice in central London on Tuesday.
“Waiters and kitchen staff are scandalously low paid,” Raj Gill, branch secretary of the GMB union’s hotels and catering branch, told Socialist Worker. “But there is a specific issue around the tips that customers leave for good service.
“In many cases this money does not go to the workers, but to the management. They then use that money as part of the minimum wage they pay to workers.
“We want tips to go to the staff in addition to the wages they get from the employer.”
