Directive threat to our services

by Tom Behan
Issue No. 1972

The European Union is currently debating a series of proposals that would mean widespread deregulation of public services, attacks on rights at work, and the destruction of the powers of local councils.

Campaigners in Italy and elsewhere are mobilising against these proposals — known as the Bolkestein directive. There will be a national demonstration in Rome this Saturday.

Alfio Nicotra, a Communist Refoundation councillor, said, “The issue is what kind of Europe do we want? Do we want to favour the market, or workers’ rights? We don’t want a race to the bottom but to the top.”
