Workers in the PCS union in the Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs (Defra) were to strike on Friday this week over pay disparities in the department.
Largely successful strikes in 2001 meant that Defra pay levels were increased. Since then management has separated the Rural Payments Agency from the rest of the department’s devolving pay and conditions.
This has meant workers there has seen their pay decline in comparison to the rest of Defra,
This year’s pay offer will see the gap widen for most staff.
Other sections are facing an even worse situation. The strike will take place in over 40 offices across the country.
