Twenty four hours after the arrest of about 120 demonstrators against poverty their lawyers are still told that arresting officers have not finished preparing papers for the arrested. Last night most of them were transferred from Harare Central to Chitungwiza and Dema, respectively 25km and 30km outside the capital Harare.

The lawyers have not yet managed to see those arrested to check reports that some of the leaders were tortured last night. Police are denying the lawyers access to them saying they have to finalise preparing the papers. It is now unlikely that they will appear in court today. They are transferring the arrested from place to place and want to keep them in the cells for a long time to instil fear in them. We expect them to appear in court tomorrow.

Faced with worsening economic and political environment the government are desparate to crush any resistance. We need your solidarity to have these people released soon. Below are the numbers for police and the attonery general - please phone and demand the immediate release of the arrested. Please also phone and send faxes to the Zimbabwean embasy in your respective country.

About 20 of the arrested are people living with HIV/AIDS and these are not currently being given accesss to treatment. Last night they were only given food after about two hours of refusal.

There are also five women with babies and several disabled people. This situation is particularly worrying. We fear that there may be fatalities because of the conditions these people are being kept under and the reports of torture.
