Lizwane Ndlovu, a Zimbabwean asylum seeker who went on hunger strike during the summer while in Yarl’s Wood detention centre, died last week.
She had not been well since being released from detention in July.
Campaigners say that she subsequently fell into a coma, and was hospitalised in Birmingham City Hospital.
The hospital has confirmed the very sad news that Lizwane died there last week.
We understand that Lizwane leaves two young children in Zimbabwe.
Campaigners are calling for an investigation to establish if the conditions of Lizwane’s detention in Yarl’s Wood, or the effects of detention, may have contributed in any way to her death.
Meanwhile, Ugandan detainees who have been on hunger strike are still detained at Yarl’s Wood. Visitors describe some of them as very sick.
In addition four current Zimbabwean detainees have also begun a hunger strike in protest at the desperate conditions and the appalling treatment they have received.
