Airports: signs of resistance

Issue No. 1978

Terminal 5

Workers employed by Laing O’Rourke at the Terminal 5 construction site, Heathrow, unanimously rejected a pay rise of 22 pence an hour at a mass meeting last week.

The GMB and T&G union members are now balloting for strikes.

Laing O’Rourke employs 850 of the 1,500 civil engineering workers on the site. Amec and Balfour Beatty employ the remainder, who have also made this claim. Discussions are still underway between the unions and those two employers.

The mechanical engineering workers on the site have already been awarded £1 per hour from this June.

Heathrow T&G reps

Union members at Heathrow are still waiting for the results of disciplinary hearings for three key reps. A meeting planned for this week between T&G leader Tony Woodley and BA chief executive Willie Walsh was cancelled by BA at short notice.

Birmingham International

Amicus union members at Birmingham International airport are to strike from 6am to 7pm on Monday after a two to one vote for action in protest at the sacking of two workers.
