New Labour’s stealthy rehabilitation of nuclear power continued this week.
A series of leaks from Downing Street said that Tony Blair supports building a new generation of nuclear power stations as a means of reducing carbon emissions.
These sources claim that in 15 years nuclear power can supply 40 percent of Britain’s energy needs — double the amount currently provided.
Energy minister Malcolm Wicks says he is “nuclear neutral”. But he was quoted back in September saying the government is “preparing to win the ‘hearts and minds’ of MPs and the public over new nuclear power stations”.
Nuclear power leaves waste that will be dangerous for generations to come. And extracting uranium and storing nuclear waste both produce carbon emissions.
Britain could meet its energy needs by investing in renewable alternatives, such as wind, solar and wave generated power.
But the government would rather hand over huge subsidies to the nuclear lobby than develop renewable energy.
Meanwhile Blair is also preparing to spend up to £25 billion on a replacement for Trident nuclear missiles — genuine weapons of mass destruction.
