A rally of around 100 people greeted strikers outside Tower Hamlets town hall in east London on Monday of this week.

Communications staff working for Tower Hamlets council were taking part in a half day strike in support of their colleague Eileen Short.

One of the strikers, who asked not to be named said, “The strike today is really solid, with 20 of us taking part.

“We’ve also had the backing of the freelancers who have refused to cover our work today.”

Speakers at the rally included NUJ general secretary Jeremy Dear, Respect MP George Galloway, Respect councillor Oliur Rahman, and local tenants.

A message of support from Dave Prentis, general secretary of Unison, was read out. It said, “It is deplorable that an employer should seek to victimise a competent and professional employee for exercising her democratic rights as a council tenant and union activist.”

The strikers were members of both the NUJ and Unison unions, which jointly called the rally to highlight Eileen’s case.

Eileen is facing redundancy after being pushed out of the press officer job she has held for 14 years.

She is a key figure in Defend Council Housing both locally and nationally.
