New nukes will be deadly waste

Issue No. 1979

Tony Blair is planning to replace Britain’s current nuclear weapons system, Trident.

This will cost an estimated £20-£25 billion. It will cost another £1 billion per year to maintain.

The NHS deficit for the past financial year is an estimated £1 billion forcing many departments around the country to close down.

Trident consists of four Vanguard-class nuclear powered submarines, of which one is on patrol at any time carrying up to 16 US Trident II D5 missiles with up to 48 warheads.

Each warhead has eight times the explosive power of the A-bomb used on Hiroshima in 1945.

Replacing Trident will effectively mean the end of Britain’s commitment to the United Nations non-proliferation treaty, which was signed in 1968. The US will control any use of the weapons.
