Second round at Terminal 5

Issue No. 1984

Construction workers at Heathrow airport’s Terminal 5 site were set to strike from Friday of this week to Tuesday of next week in an ongoing dispute over bonus pay.

It is the second stoppage by members of the T&G and GMB unions working for Laing O’Rourke construction company.

The first was a week before Christmas. The company has failed to match the extra £1 an hour that was agreed for mechanical engineering workers on the site in June.

Bonus pay rates have not been reviewed for three years and the joint unions are drawing comparisons with other contractors on site who have agreed to the claim, which amounts to under £50 a week.

Tom Kelly, GMB construction organiser, said, “Since the ballot more than 300 new members have joined the unions taking action.” Alan Brkljac, T&G regional industrial organiser, agreed saying, “People on site are joining by the day as they see us fighting back.”
