Lecturers ballot for strike

by Malcolm Povey
Issue No. 1985

Unions representing university academics and academic related staff – the AUT and the lecturers’ Natfhe union are currently balloting their members for strike action.

The ballot closes on 16 February.

The EIS education union in Scotland is also likely to ballot.

Academic salaries have declined by 40 percent in the last 20 years compared with average earnings. The NUS student union is backing the lecturers’ unions.

Natfhe and the AUT are merging to form a union with 110,000 members. A big yes vote would get the new union off to a good start.

Activists need to campaign for a high turnout in the ballot. We are campaigning for a third of all the additional income entering the sector.

The unions are opposed to student fees and we must demand that the government pay the extra money which will be needed to finance the claim.
