Mass lobby over council housing

by Alan Walter, chair of Defend Council Housing
Issue No. 1986

Council tenants, councillors and trade unionists from all over Britain are coming to London on Wednesday of next week for a mass rally and lobby of parliament.

We’re demanding an end to the government bullying and blackmailing us to accept privatisation. We want decent, well maintained homes and estates—but we won’t give up our secure tenancy for new kitchens and bathrooms. We want both.

Delegations from 85 areas have notified they are coming. MPs Michael Meacher, Frank Dobson, Austin Mitchell, Gerald Kaufman and Kate Hoey will speak at Central Hall Westminster alongside tenants, senior councillors and trade union leaders.

We’re fighting for the “fourth option” for council housing investment—money for improvements, without the risks of privatisation.

We demand that every penny of our rents and all the money from land sales, transfers and right to buy is spent on our council homes.

Some 98 councils have rejected the government’s privatisation options. More tenants are voting no to transfer and the latest proposals on arms length management organisations (Almos) show we are right to say this is just two stage privatisation. Make sure there’s a broad based delegation from your area.

The Defend Council Housing lobby starts at 11.30am on Wednesday 8 February in Parliament Square, central London. For more information go to www.defendcouncilhousing.org.uk
