Stop selection in our schools

Issue No. 1986

Widespread opposition to New Labour’s education proposals is fuelling grassroots campaigning in defence of comprehensive education.

A “Rally for a Comprehensive Future” called in London for Thursday 2 March is gaining support way beyond teachers.

“This is about the defence and extension of comprehensive education,” says Nick Grant of the National Union of Teachers (NUT) in Ealing, west London, one of a growing number of union bodies backing the protest.

“This is the time to raise our sights, not to accept unnecessary compromise with the government.” Among the speakers at the rally will be NUT deputy secretary Christine Blower.

Lobby of the Department for Education, Thursday 2 March, 6pm, at the Sanctuary Buildings, just off Victoria Street, followed by rally at 7pm at Central Hall Westminster.
