Education white paper

Issue No. 1988

Around 150 teachers, parents, local residents and school students attended a meeting against the government’s education White Paper in Hackney, east London on Wednesday of last week.

They heard former Labour MP Tony Benn and Baljeet Ghale, NUT teachers’ union vice president, express the threat to comprehensive education posed by New Labour’s plans.

People spoke about the problems of education in Hackney – with the council and the Learning Trust attempting to close down Homerton school. There have also been attacks on Haggerston school.

The council and Learning Trust want to bring a number of academy schools, run by private companies, into the borough. The meeting discussed how to resist this.

March and rally for a comprehensive future. Assemble 5.30pm, Thursday 2 March, Ambrodesen Avenue, beside Westminster cathedral, central London. Called by Ealing NUT.

Meeting on the White Paper, 6pm, Thursday 23 February, Council Chamber, Camden Town Hall, Judd Street WC1. With Frank Dobson MP and Fiona Millar.
