Solidarity with Iranian workers

Issue No. 1989

About 130 people joined a protest outside the Iranian embassy in London on Wednesday of last week in support of striking bus workers in Iran.

While the TUC had advertised the protest, which was part of an international day of action, it did little to mobilise support.

Most of the protesters were Iranian exiles.

A leaflet produced by Iranian anti-war activists was warmly received. It called for support for the bus strikers and the release of their leader, who is among hundreds who have been arrested for going on strike.

At the same time it called on trade unionists in Britain to “reject any attempt by forces in the US, Britain or elsewhere to misuse this repression to attempt to justify their agenda” for a military attack on Iran.

Among those signing the statement on the leaflet were Andrew Murray and Lindsey German from the Stop the War Coalition, Natfhe general secretary Paul Mackney, RMT general secretary Bob Crow, PCS general secretary Mark Serwotka, CWU executive member Jane Loftus, and NUT national treasurer (elect) Ian Murch.

The leaflet can be downloaded from the Stop the War website at
