Scottish Socialist Party election result

Issue No. 1989

The Scottish Socialist Party (SSP) won just short of 6 percent in a Glasgow city council by-election last week in Milton, beating the combined votes of both the Tories and the Liberal Democrats.

The Scottish National Party won running a candidate who had opposed the council’s stock transfer of council housing and tapped into a mood to punish New Labour.

SSP candidate Angela McCormick said, “Lots of people who’d promised to vote for us apologised saying they wanted to hurt Labour.”
