Postal workers in Plymouth

Plymouth postal workers are awaiting results of talks before preparing for further strikes. Protracted negotiations last week got close to a settlement over the initial issues over conditions and staffing which led to the dispute.

But bosses insisted that the CWU union branch secretary and area delivery rep would not regain the facility time (time off for union duties) they lost as punishment for previous strikes.

It should be reiterated that this was balloted, legal action which Royal Mail is attacking by sanctions. This is now a national policy, and one which the CWU leadership cannot allow to pass into normality.

A national briefing for Royal Mail letters reps was to take place this week. It should discuss the Plymouth situation and tell management that they have to back off. The briefing was to talk about pay and the new efficiency agreement as well.

General secretary election

Billy Hayes has been re-elected unopposed as CWU general secretary.
