The NPC has just published its second annual Age Audit of life for older people in Britain.
With information drawn from government statistics and data from other reputable sources, the audit shows the scale of inequality experienced by millions of older people.
Its findings include:
- Two million (one in five) pensioners live below the official poverty line.
- Since 2002-3 the state pension has risen by 9 percent. Over the same period water charges have increased by 13 percent, council tax by 23 percent and gas by 49 percent.
- Last winter, 31,600 older people died as a result of the cold – the highest figure for five years.
