Newly elected Respect councillor Salma Yaqoob spoke to an audience of around 300 people last Saturday who had gathered in Burford, Oxfordshire, to commemorate Levellers Day.

The event honours the memory of three Leveller soldiers executed in Burford in 1649 for mutiny. They were defying Oliver Cromwell’s orders to send them to Ireland as part of Britain’s first colonial war.

Salma spoke alongside Tony Benn and others against war, racism and Britain’s imperial adventures today. The meeting was followed by a march through the town, a wreath laying ceremony and the singing of the Internationale.
